Welcome to The Tots' Clubhouse Nursery School, Atherstone.

'Carpe diem!' Seize the day!

'Auto-efficacia' Believe in yourself!

The Tots' Clubhouse provides early years education for 0 to 5 year olds.  Each child is cared for by highly qualified and experienced staff.  Balancing formal and informal learning; children enjoy high quality learning experiences indoors and outdoors.

The key difference with our learning and teaching approach - developing confidence, self-efficacy and independence.  Being confident to try new things, engage in conversation, join-in with teamwork, and believe that anything is possible - is a big development leap for many children.  But, a joy to see the results.  Every child is sensitively supported along their journey to develop confidence in all they do.

We intend to open for the majority of the year to provide long-term childcare as well as flexible short-term and ad hoc options.  Our learning model allows us to do things differently and flexibly - we don't intend to specify a minimum number of days or hours that your child attends.  We work with you to decide what is best for you and your child.

Our Philosophy

Alongside the Early Years Framework, our philosophy for early years education is focused on TOTS: 'Talking', 'Observing', 'Teamwork' and 'Skills'.

  • We believe that developing communication skills and learning to read are key to understanding the world around us.
  • We believe that by observing us and others encourages listening, looking, comprehending and learning to respond in appropriate ways.
  • We believe that working together as a team is both important for children and adults.
  • We believe in the Early Years Framework seven areas of learning and the characteristics of effective learning and teaching - playing and exploring, active learning, and creating and thinking critically.
  • We believe that alongside the Early Years Framework, key skills in reading, writing, maths and science will be developed.
  • We believe in leveraging opportunities  to also provide specialist learning pathways including European languages, football for all, yoga and well-being, swimming, tennis, and technology and programming.

We believe in the Early Years Statutory Framework requirements:

  • Every child is a unique child, who is constantly learning and can be resilient, capable, confident and self-assured.
  • Children learn to be strong and independent through positive relationships.
  • Children learn and develop well in enabling environments with teaching and support from adults, who respond to their individual interests and needs and help them to build their learning over time.
  • Children benefit from a strong partnership between educators and parents and/or carers.
  • Children develop and learn at different rates.

Teacher-led, child-led, in-the-moment learning

We focus on teacher-led learning experiences where children need to gain key skills and knowledge.  We also follow child-led learning because every child has different interests and skills, and we use in-the-moment learning to further each child's unique development.  With highly skilled educators and high expectations, we support the development of independent learning, curiosity and exploration.

We focus on real-life learning.  We use our garden to promote an understanding of sustainability, conservation, recycling and healthy eating.  We use small world discovery to promote social interactions and life-learning. We provide a wide-range of activities that support the development of observation, care and kindness, positive interactions and empathy.

We focus on skills.  Teaching children to read is paramount and we will support children as early as possible to learn to read.  All children will be taught to read as part of their readiness to start school.  We will use stories to teach life-learning, morals and managing emotions.

TOTS stands for Talking, Observing, Teamwork and Skills. Key elements for both children and adults at our Nursery School.

Talking!

We focus on communication and language development. It is the quality of the conversation that is key to learning.  Conversational interactions have a positive impact on brain development.  We focus on the amount of language that little ones are exposed to and the number of conversational turns.   This is the foundation for higher level cognition.

Observing!

We focus on observational learning - listening, looking, comprehening and responding.  Developing attention, mirroring behaviours, and imitating good role models are key to social learning. We focus on modelling positive behaviours and developing motivation for learning.

Teamwork!

We focus on teamwork to support social interactions and developing positive relationships.  It is the opportunity to gain personal and group skills, and to develop confidence in their own abilities.  Learning to work together, both adults and children, for a common goal is key to co-operation and collaboration.

Skills!

With a child-led approach and enabling environments, we focus on skill development through play.  We appreciate that every child learns in a different way and at a different rate.  Through the Early Years Framework, we develop children's understanding in the key development areas.  We also focus on teaching reading, mathematics and science concepts.  These are the foundations of school readiness.
